China e-commerce glossary

Cross-Border E-Commerce (CBEC)
A government-supported trade model allowing foreign brands to sell directly to Chinese consumers without formally importing products. Products are stored in bonded warehouses — physically in China but legally outside customs territory. CBEC bypasses most domestic product registration requirements.
Tmall Partner (TP)
An agency officially authorized by Alibaba to set up, manage, and grow stores on Tmall and Tmall Global. TPs handle store registration, design, daily operations, marketing, customer service, and logistics on behalf of the brand. Shanghai Jungle is an official Tmall Partner.
Tmall Global vs. Tmall Classic
Tmall Global (天猫国际) is the cross-border version — no Chinese entity required, products ship from bonded warehouses. Tmall Classic (天猫) is the domestic version — requires a WFOE and full product certifications. Most foreign brands start with Tmall Global.
Bonded Warehouse
A customs-supervised storage facility in a Chinese free trade zone. Products ship in bulk from abroad and clear customs individually when a consumer orders. Delivery within 1–3 days. Major locations include Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Ningbo, and Zhengzhou.
Shopping Festivals
Massive promotional events organized by platforms — Singles' Day (11.11), 6.18, Double 12, Women's Day (3.8), and Chinese New Year. These events can account for 30–50% of a brand's annual sales. Participation requires weeks of advance planning, pre-sale mechanics, and coordinated marketing.
Little Red Book (Xiaohongshu)
A social commerce platform with over 300 million monthly active users combining product reviews, user-generated content, and shopping. When Chinese consumers discover a new brand, their first instinct is to search for it on Little Red Book. Increasingly a transactional platform through RedNote Store.
